Spring is often the season associated with cleaning. But how many of us actually spend some of this time cleaning out our body? The body is equipped with amazing detoxification abilities. Our liver, lungs, kidneys, digestive system, skin and lymph all play a role in keeping toxins moving through and out of our body. However, no matter how hard we try, we are exposed to hundreds of chemicals and pollutants every day which take a toll on our detoxification organs. We can offer assistance by doing a gentle detoxifying cleanse once or twice a year. Some of the benefits can include improved energy, mental clarity, weight loss and clearer skin.
The following are some general guidelines for a safe and gentle cleanse. It is best to allow 2 to 4 weeks to complete the cleanse.
1. Start by slowly reducing your exposure to any known toxins.
2. Then focus on cleaning up your diet by gradually cutting back on caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate), alcohol and sugar. Give yourself at least a week to remove these items from your diet. You may need a longer transition time from these substances if you experience withdrawal symptoms.
3. During the second week begin the cleansing protocol. Maintain a plant based diet focused primarily on whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables, especially raw fruits and vegetables as these tend to have a more detoxifying action.
4. Drink plenty of pure water and herbal teas; aim for 2-3 liters a day.
5. You will also want to limit your intake of meat, cheese, hydrogenated fats and “junk” foods during this time.
6. Sweating helps remove toxins. Participate in some form of moderate exercise and/or a 10 minute sauna each day. 7. An herbal tea, such as Every Day Detox from Traditional Medicinals, is an easy way to incorporate the healing benefits of herbs into your cleanse. Drink 1 cup daily.
This regimen should be maintained for at least 1 week or up to 3 weeks. Some people also like to include a liquid fast as part of their cleanse. I do not recommend fasting for longer than a day or two without the support of a health practitioner. For a personalized detoxification protocol and to take into account any medical conditions you may have I strongly recommend working with a practitioner before beginning a cleanse.
